The dataset consists of 24 interviews with adult webcam models (22 in the United States, 1 in Canada, and 1 in a post-Soviet country). The dataset also includes interviews with 2 clients of adult webcam models, 1 adult entertainment lawyer, 1 worker at a non-profit organization supporting sex workers, 2 website operators, 1 webcam studio operator and performer, and 1 virtual studio operator. There are a total of 32 interviews.

\n\n

The interviews were recorded in person (4) and online via video chat (28). Interviews range in length from 45 minutes to 5 hours, with the majority of the interviews lasting around 2.5 hours.

\n\n

The majority of the interviews have been transcribed and pseudonymized (26). 6 interviews are only audio recordings.

\n\n

Some topics discussed in the interviews include: social media, webcamming, clients, the regulation of the webcam industry, the impact of the law on webcam performers, mental health, sexual pleasure, sexual acts, kink and BDSM, consent, boundaries, intimacy, relationships, entry into sex work, social stigma, and other topics related to being a webcam performer.

An initial message was sent to people suspected of being webcam performers (based on their profiles) with a message explaining the purpose of the research and a brief guideline of the interview process. People were asked to respond if they were interested, and invited to ask any questions they had about the research or the researcher. Over 250 people were contacted but the majority did not respond or were not interested in being interviewed. \n\nInterviews with webcam performers took place online via video chat. Interviews were recorded using an external audio recorder (not connected to the Internet). Interviews were transcribed manually or (with consent) using semi-automated transcription software (and manually corrected). \n\nInterviews lasted between 45 minutes and 4.5 hours, with the majority lasting around 2.5 hours.\n\nInterviews were semi-structured. A topic list was developed prior to the interviews but the interviews were allowed to flow naturally based on the topics of conversation, with occasional redirection. \n\nRespondents in general were very open to talking. This population is very accustomed to speaking online with people they do not know via video chat. In general, the people were very friendly, funny, and the conversation flowed naturally. There were two instances when it felt like it was a challenge to make connection with the interviewees. \n\nHowever, it must be noted that only people who were willing to speak with a researcher participated, which likely skewed the data and the experience of the interviews. \n\nInterviews with non-webcam models took place in-person or online. They lasted between 1 hour and 5 hours, with the majority lasting around 2 hours. The two website operators interviewed were interviewed at the same time. They worked for the same website. The audio recordings interview with the adult entertainment lawyer and non-profit worker may be difficult to transcribe due to noise in the background (construction and music).
