Haar ouders, afkomstig van Ambon en Banda, hechtten groot belang aan onderwijs, zelfstandigheid en de Nederlandse taal. Het voorbeeld van haar moeder als kleuterleidster bepaalde al vroeg haar wens om zelf voor de klas te staan. Omdat in Nieuw-Guinea geen passende vervolgopleiding beschikbaar was, vertrok zij in 1957 op dertienjarige leeftijd zonder haar ouders naar Nederland. Daar woonde zij achtereenvolgens bij verschillende Nederlandse gezinnen, moest zij onderwijsachterstanden wegwerken en kreeg zij te maken met heimwee, onbegrip en discriminatie. Haar doel om leerkracht te worden bleef richtinggevend.\n\nNa de overdracht van Nieuw-Guinea hielp zij haar familie bij de komst naar Nederland. Zelf bouwde zij in Hoogeveen een loopbaan in het onderwijs op. Zij gaf les aan Molukse kinderen uit Nieuw-Guinea, organiseerde huiswerkbegeleiding en zette zich binnen een Molukse stichting in voor ontmoeting en verbinding tussen verschillende groepen. Ook haar gezinsleven, geloof en zorg voor haar vader en haar echtgenoot met dementie vormen belangrijke verhaallijnen. Oorlogservaringen bereikten haar vooral via de late en fragmentarische verhalen van haar vader en echtgenoot. Terugkijkend verbindt zij moeilijke perioden met dankbaarheid, geloof, zorg voor anderen en het actief blijven zoeken naar een doel en betekenis in het dagelijks
