En waren ze betrokken bij het besluit van hun mannen te strijden tegen de Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsbeweging? De interviews maken duidelijk welke ingrijpende gevolgen die beslissing had voor de persoonlijke relaties van de vrouwen en de relatie met hun geboorteland.</p><p>De getuigenissen leveren een genuanceerd en genderspecifiek beeld op van het leven en de keuzes van Molukse KNIL-militairen. Ze vormen daarmee een waardevolle aanvulling op de geschiedschrijving van de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederlands-Indië. Maar ze vertellen ook over de nasleep ervan: de Indonesische revolutie, de onafhankelijkheid, de strijd om de inrichting van het nieuwe Indonesië, de proclamatie van de Republiek der Zuid-Molukken en
