Ze groeit op in een gezin met acht kinderen waarvan zij de tweede is. Haar vader was niet zo sterk waardoor haar moeder en kinderen meehielpen het gezin te onderhouden.</p><p>Toen het dorp werd aangevallen door de Japanners, dachten de bewoners dat het schip hen iets goeds bracht. Maar het dorp werd volop beschoten. Iedereen vluchtte de bossen in, ook zij met haar familie. Al aan het begin van de oorlog werd een oom gedood door de beschietingen. De kerk werd helemaal kapotgeschoten.</p><p>Het gezin woonde vijf of zes maanden in de bossen. De Japanners bleven in het dorp en de vrouwen uit het dorp bleven in de bossen. Haar vader moest voor de Japanners werken aan het vliegveld in Pelau. Maar omdat hij immers niet zo sterk was, vonden ze iemand die tegen betaling voor hem wilde invallen.</p><p>Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het in Oma weer onrustig vanwege de RMS oorlog. Mensen kwamen om zich in de bossen te verschuilen, wat nog slachtoffers onder de dorpelingen bracht.</p><p>In 1947 kwam een Nederlandse boot naar het eiland om mannen op te roepen in het KNIL te dienen. In de familie leidt dit nog tot consternatie. Haar voorouders hebben het nageslacht verboden het leger in te gaan of met een soldaat te
