Hij dook onder, werd opgepakt en belandde in Vught. In september 1944 werd hij gedeporteerd naar Sachsenhausen. Als metaalbewerker kreeg hij een baantje in een fabriek waar ze elektromotoren maakten. Dat was buiten het kamp zelf. Hij werd daar goed behandeld. Na de oorlog moest Schut naar Indonesië. Hij geeft aan dat hij erg hard geworden is door wat hij heeft meegemaakt in beide oorlogen. Hoewel er gedurende de hele oorlog gevangenen vanuit Vught naar Sachsenhausen werden afgevoerd, zijn de treinen die op 5 en 6 september 1944 vertrokken het meest berucht. Zo'n drieduizend mannen werden toen gedeporteerd, slechts de helft keerde terug.<br><br>Bij de Sachsenhausen-herdenking in september 2006 riep een oud-gevangene zijn mede-slachtoffers op om over hun ervaringen in de concentratiekampen Vught en Sachsenhausen te vertellen, omdat er niet lang meer overlevenden zullen zijn die hun verhalen kunnen doorgeven. Deze oproep was voor de gemeente Vught aanleiding het initiatief te nemen voor het project 'Retourtje Sachsenhausen'. Samen met het Vughts Historisch Museum en Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught is het project uitgewerkt. Het project bestaat uit drie onderdelen: het vastleggen van wat er gebeurd is d.m.v. 11 interviews met overlevenden, een documentaire waarin een overlevende de reis per trein nogmaals maakt, vergezeld van een scholier die hem daarover vragen stelt.
