Leida vertelt dat ze erg verwend werd. Op haar twaalfde jaar komt zij naast de familie Keesing te wonen. Leida spreekt met grote waardering en liefde over alle leden van het gezin. Op haar zestiende verlooft ze zich met de zoon, Guus.</p><p>Vader Keesing voorziet al vanaf 1933 dat het mis zal gaan. Hij probeert zijn familie en vrienden over te halen te emigreren. Zelf vertrekt hij met zijn echtgenote in 1939. Vanuit Amerika weet hij zijn dochter en zoon over te halen over te komen. Leida en Guus werken gedurende de oorlogstijd in Amerika heel hard. Ze hopen genoeg geld te verdienen om Leida’s familie over te laten komen.</p><p>Leida denkt heel lang dat haar ouders in Bergen-Belsen zijn omgekomen. Pas in de zestiger jaren zoekt een kennis bij het Rode Kruis uit hoe het zit. Eigenlijk wist ze weinig van de vernietigingskampen en liefst had ze het zo gehouden. Het gemis en het verdriet over wat haar familie is aangedaan, is heel groot.
