Zijn familie behoorde tot de klasse van Indo-Europeanen en hij behoorde tot de vierde generatie die in Nederlands-Indië opgroeide.</p><p>Na de Japanse inval moest het gezin onderduiken. Vader Abuys was marinier bij het KNIL en liep hierdoor gevaar. Vanuit het onderduikadres gaf vader in het geheim onderwijs aan kinderen uit de buurt en in ruil daarvoor kreeg het gezin voedsel en andere goederen. Hoewel de meeste gezinsleden uit angst voor de Japanners binnenbleven, kon mijnheer Abuys naar buiten om te werken als broodbezorger.</p><p>In 1945 werd het gezin verraden en de laatste 9 oorlogsmaanden brachten ze door in het familiekamp Tjitja Lobak. Meneer Abuys heeft overwegend positieve kampherinneringen. Er was meestal voldoende voedsel en hij kon het kamp als geitenhoeder regelmatig verlaten.</p><p>Tijdens de Bersiap heeft het gezin, zowel in het kamp als na hun terugkeer in Bandoeng, gevreesd voor hun leven. In Bandoeng richtte vader Abuys opnieuw een school op, en het gezin maakte zowel de komst van de Gurkha’s als de politionele acties mee.</p><p>Na de onafhankelijkheid van Indonesië repatriëerde het gezin in 1950 en ze werden in verschillende Nederlandse pensions opgevangen. Ieder interview is afzonderlijk beschreven in een eigen dataset: u vindt hier een samenvatting van het interview, trefwoorden en de video.</p><p>Het interviewproject ‘Herinneringen aan Indië’ is in 2011 opgestart  door het Indisch Herinneringscentrum. De nog altijd groeiende collectie bestaat momenteel uit meer dan 70 interviews met mensen die in de perioden voor, tijdens en vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederlands-Indië verbleven. Hiervan zijn er nu 10 beschikbaar via EASY.</p><p>Onderwerpen zoals het leven voor de oorlog, de Japanse inval, de krijgsgevangenschap, de bevrijding en de repatriëring worden belicht vanuit verschillende bevolkingsgroepen. Dit heeft geresulteerd in een gevarieerde collectie met interviews.</p><p>Door hun verhaal te vertellen dragen de geïnterviewden bij aan de herinnering van een essentiële periode binnen de Nederlandse geschiedenis.
