Op 29 augustus 1939 moest hij zich in Groningen melden voor de mobilisatie. Door zijn resolute optreden toen een span paarden van de korpstrein op hol sloeg, werd hij prompt treincommandant. 12RI werd op transport gezet naar Santpoort. Bij het ontschepen daar was Prins Bernhard aanwezig. Ze werden ingewartierd bij boeren. Maar de voorbereiding op een echte oorlog ontbrak, vond deze gemobiliseerde. Hij wilde daarover, een week voor de inval, met de kapitein spreken. De geïnterviewden hebben bijgedragen aan een schat aan informatie voor onder andere beleidsmakers, onderzoekers, media en het geïnteresseerde publiek.</p><p>Onderstaand treft u de links naar de metadata van alle interviews. De  interviews zijn om privacyredenen alleen na toestemming van het Veternanen Instituut toegankelijk.
