De voormobilisatie was gericht op de verdediging van de oostgrenzen; hij werd geplaatst ten noorden van Venlo bij Grubbenvorst, waar zijn ouders vlakbij woonden. Zijn manschappen waren dertigers, meest al getrouwd. Pas na de algehele mobilisatie in 1939 werden de stellingen nabij de kazematten verbeterd en werden sommige kazematten voorzien van pantserkoepels, met name op de westoever van de Maas. Om beurten moest een officier met een vooruitgeschoven sectie op de oostoever van de Maas bij de Duitse grens wacht houden. Vlak voor de Duitse inval was het zijn beurt. Op donderdagavond 9 mei hoorde hij geluiden van troepenverplaatsingen, onder begeleiding van marsmuziek. Tegen drie uur was het ineens doodstil en een half uur later overschreden de Duitsers de Nederlandse grens. De aanvallers staken in rubberboten over, ongeveer 10 man per boot, vijf boten tegelijk. Het vuuroverwicht was zo groot dat men niets kon uitrichten. De geïnterviewden hebben bijgedragen aan een schat aan informatie voor onder andere beleidsmakers, onderzoekers, media en het geïnteresseerde publiek.</p><p>Onderstaand treft u de links naar de metadata van alle interviews. De  interviews zijn om privacyredenen alleen na toestemming van het Veternanen Instituut toegankelijk.
