Hij woont met zijn ouders in de Swammerdamstraat in Amsterdam. Zijn ouders hebben beiden kinderen uit een eerder huwelijk. Twee halfzusjes worden samen met hun moeder in Sobibor vermoord. De ouders van Rob komen om in Auschwitz. Ook een halfbroer en veel andere familieleden zijn door de nazi’s vermoord, zowel in Auschwitz en Sobibor als elders.</p><p>Drie oudere (half)broers van Rob overleven de oorlog door onder te duiken. Wat Rob weet over zijn gezin en familie heeft hij van horen zeggen. Zijn onderduikouders worden later zijn pleegouders, die hij als zijn echte ouders beschouwt: hij weet niet beter. Zij zijn zeer actief binnen de gereformeerde geloofsgemeenschap. Zijn pleegmoeder overlijdt al in 1949, zijn pleegvader hertrouwt in 1951. Zijn nieuwe pleegmoeder vertelt hem dat hij pleegkind en Joods is. Zijn echte broers groeien ergens anders op en geleidelijk leert Rob hen kennen. Op zijn vijftiende overlijdt zijn pleegvader, een goed mens die veel voor anderen deed: Rob was gek op hem.</p><p>Het verschil tussen het gereformeerde leven thuis en het joodse leven van zijn andere familie roept innerlijke conflicten op. Verwarring en verdriet spelen een grote rol in zijn leven. Samen met zijn vrouw voedt hij zijn drie kinderen Joods op.
