Toen hij veertien was, begon hij met werken in een bakkerij. Eind jaren dertig ging hij in militaire dienst. Tijdens de meidagen van 1940 was hij als onderofficier gelegerd in Werkendam. Steinfort heeft niet gevochten, zijn eenheid werd niet in gevechten betrokken. De capitulatie, en vooral het vertrek van de koningin naar Engeland, veroorzaakte een grote schok bij hem.</p><p>Na de capitulatie keerde Steinfort terug naar het ouderlijk huis. Hij ging in het verzet en werd via een oudere broer lid van een knokploeg. Het ouderlijk huis werd door de Duitsers doorzocht, maar Steinfort hield zich verborgen in een kast. Zijn verloofde was in oorlogstijd koerierster. Het gezin waaruit zij stamde, ging in 1944 mee met de Vrijmaking.</p><p>Het gezin Steinfort bleef de synodale kerk trouw, behalve Bert Steinfort, die met zijn vrouw meeging naar de gereformeerde kerk vrijgemaakt. Desondanks leidde de kerkscheuring in de familie niet tot de problemen, er werd zo min mogelijk over het geloof gesproken.
