Met een meid, een knecht, acht kinderen, vader en moeder woonde men op een boerderij in Mill. Zij beschrijft de boerderij, die in de jaren 20 nieuw gebouwd was, en het alledaagse leven voor de oorlog.</p><p>Op 10 mei 1940 evacueerde het gezin naar Wanroij. Toen men terug kwam, stond de boerderij er nog. Er was wel geplunderd en de schuur was verwoest. Ook de boerderijen van de buren waren verwoest.</p><p>De geïnterviewde beschrijft de noodwoningen van de buren. Ze verschaft een inkomen, maar vertegenwoordigt vaak ook een familiegeschiedenis, traditie en identiteit. Het verlies van een boerderij is voor betrokkenen daarom zeer ingrijpend. Dit lot trof in de Tweede Wereldoorlog duizenden boerengezinnen. In totaal werden in de jaren ’40-’45 in Nederland meer dan 8.000 boerderijen verwoest.</p><p>Boerinnen en boerendochters vormen een speciale groep oorlogsgetroffenen. Juist zij vervulden op de boerderij veel taken en waren er op een bijzondere manier mee verbonden.</p><p>Het Meertens Instituut heeft boerinnen en boerendochters geïnterviewd in Groesbeek, Mill en de Grebbelinie. Het resultaat is een verzameling van twaalf persoonlijke verhalen over de verwoestingen tijdens de oorlog, het dagelijks leven in noodwoningen en de wederopbouw.</p><p>De interviews belichten verschillende perspectieven: de tienerdochter, de boerenmeid, de dochter die naar een pleeggezin moest, de arbeidersdochter en boerendochter die niet van een boerderij kwamen, maar de verwoestingen en het leven in een noodwoning van nabij meemaakten.
