Evert volgde een opleiding als onderwijzer. In de jaren dertig kon hij als kwekeling met acte geen betaald werk in Nederland vinden. Wel kon hij in 1939 werk vinden aan een MULO school in Medan, zodat hij als jonge onderwijzer afreisde naar toenmalig Nederlands-Indië, het huidige Indonesië. In Nederlands-Indië moest hij ook beschikbaar zijn voor militaire dienst. Zijn verloofde was actief in het verzet in Nederland.</p><p>Evert werd krijgsgevangene gemaakt door de Japanners en werd gedwongen te werken aan de Birma-spoorlijn. Daarna moest hij  nog anderhalf jaar in Japan in een kolenmijn werken. Hij heeft de verwoestingen in Nagasaki gezien.</p><p>Terug in Indonesië kwam hij als ex-krijgsgevangene op Borneo terecht, en werd daar opnieuw onderwijzer aan de MULO. Zijn verloofde kwam in 1947 over.<br><br>Zijn zuster Geert koos voor communisme. Volgens Evert hadden haar ervaringen als schipperskind daarmee te maken.
