Hij vertelt dat hij tijdens de oorlog deel uitmaakte van twee verzetsgroepen. De ene groep was ontstaan binnen de zwemclub waarvan hij lid was. Met de andere groep had hij contact via zijn vader, die al voor het uitbreken van de oorlog Duitse vluchtelingen hielp vervoeren. Soms werd ook De Vries gevraagd om een vluchteling te begeleiden.</p><p>Op een gegeven moment werd hij opgeroepen om te gaan werken in Duitsland. In juni 1942 kwam hij terecht in de Junkersvliegtuigfabriek in Kassel. Hij vertelt over het werk en de sabotageactiviteiten in de fabriek. Toen er te weinig werk was, werd hij overgeplaatst naar een fabriek in Chemnitz waar onderdelen gemaakt werden voor V1’s  en de V2’s.</p><p>Na te zijn beschuldigd van sabotage werd hij in november 1944 op transport gezet naar Buchenwald. Daar zat hij voor een periode van twee tot drie weken in het quarantainekamp. Eind 1944 werd hij op transport gezet naar kamp Witten-Annen bij Hagen. Hij moest er werken in een fabriek die pantserwagenwielen produceerde.</p><p>Toen het Amerikaanse leger naderde, werden de gevangenen op transport gezet. Ze moesten richting Paderborn lopen. Uiteindelijk werden ze op 1 april 1945 in Lippstadt bevrijd. De Vries reisde met een vriend naar diens familie in het reeds bevrijde Limburg. Nadat ook de rest van Nederland was bevrijd, keerde hij begin juni 1945 terug naar huis.
