He had an elder brother and a younger sister. The family lived together with the grandfather from his father's side - and his second wife plus a few relatives - in a house divided for the purpose. Arkady had had ten years of school when he enrolled in the Red Army in 1939. He was wounded, made POW (prisoner of war), and, in September 1943, deported to Sobibor, where he was selected for forced labour.</p><p>Arkady played an active part in the preparation of the revolt and during the revolt together with a fellow inmate killed an SS man and a Ukrainian guard with their own hands. After his escape from Sobibor he enrolled with the partisans. When the war was over Arkady took up his studies, got married, and started working as a technical engineer in various factories at several places in the Soviet Union. Upon retirement he and his wife moved to Kiev so as to live close to one of their sons. His wife died in 2004.</p><p>\n--- Description in Dutch ---<br>Arkady Wajspapir (Arkadii Weisspapier) is in 1921 geboren in het dorpje Bobrovyy Kut in Oekraïne. Bobrovyy Kut is een Joodse gemeenschap. Arkadii heeft een oudere broer en een jonger zusje. Het gezin leeft samen met de grootvader - en diens tweede vrouw en enkele familieleden - van vaders zijde in een huis dat ze hebben opgesplitst.</p><p>Arkady heeft tien jaar onderwijs genoten voordat hij vanaf 1939 in het Rode Leger dienst neemt. Hij raakt gewond, wordt krijgsgevangen gemaakt en in september 1943 naar Sobibor gedeporteerd, alwaar hij geselecteerd wordt om dwangarbeid te verrichten. Arkady is actief betrokken bij de voorbereiding van de opstand en doodt samen met een medegevangene tijdens de opstand eigenhandig met een bijl een SS’er en een Oekraïense bewaker.</p><p>Na zijn ontsnapping uit Sobibor sluit hij zich aan bij de partizanen. Als de oorlog voorbij is, gaat Arkady studeren, hij trouwt en werkt als technisch verantwoordelijke bij verschillende ondernemingen op diverse plaatsen in de Sovjet-Unie. Na zijn arbeidzame leven verhuizen hij en zijn vrouw naar Kiev om in de buurt van een van hun zonen te wonen.
