Vader en grootvader brengen tapijten aan de man en moeder schilderijen, vooral in Monnickendam en Volendam. Louis kan zich veel herinneren van het Joodse leven in zijn buurt. De onderduik brengt hij op verschillende adressen door.</p><p>Louis ontdekt dat hij er, omdat hij besneden is, anders uitziet dan andere jongens en probeert dit zelf te verhelpen met draad. Hij ligt vervolgens een half jaar in een ziekenhuis waar ook Duitse soldaten worden opgenomen. Vader is al heel snel in Westerbork waar hij het in het begin wel goed heeft. Moeder wil graag bij haar man zijn. Samen worden ze naar Sobibor gedeporteerd. Na de oorlog wordt Louis uit een prettig pleeggezin weggehaald en ondergebracht bij mensen die niet om hem geven. Louis vraagt aan zijn voogd of hij naar het Joods Jongensweeshuis mag. Later raakt hij zo gedesillusioneerd dat hij een tijdje naar Australië gaat. Terug in Nederland belandt Louis in het Joods Begrafeniswezen. Voor zijn ouders die geen begrafenis hebben gehad, laat hij een steen aan de Gedenklaan in Sobibor leggen.
