Hij komt uit een gezin met tien kinderen, waarin hij het zevende kind was.</p><p>Toen de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbrak, was hij nog een kind. Hij bracht zijn kinderjaren in Malang door. Zijn zus zorgde voor gaarkeukens voor Ambonese vrouwen, waarvan de mannen aan het front stonden. Zijn vader was controleur van de Volkskredietbank, ook 'pandhuis-diensten' genoemd. Hijzelf werkte in een Japanse fietsfabriek en later in een sigarettenfabriek. Zijn broer sneuvelde in de Bersiaptijd.</p><p>Daarna ging het gezin terug naar de Molukken. Dat noemde hij een verkeerde keus van zijn vader, die dacht dat de Molukken een autonoom deel van de federatie van Indonesië zouden worden. Het gezin geraakte in armoede. Op Ambon maakte hij de RMS oorlog mee. Oorlog na oorlog na oorlog, zegt hij zelf.</p><p>Voordat hij in 1966 naar Nederland kwam, bekleedde hij een verantwoordelijke functie bij de Garuda, de Indonesische
