Met een paar vrienden probeerde hij verzetsactiviteiten op te zetten: het laten ontsporen van een goederentrein en het opzetten van een vluchtroute naar Zwitserland. Deze pogingen mislukten en ze besloten om naar Engeland te gaan om in het Nederlandse leger te dienen. Door verraad werden ze in de Pyreneeën opgepakt.</p><p>Begin 1943 kwamen ze via diverse Franse gevangenissen in Buchenwald terecht. Janssen werd in blok 49 geplaatst en werkte in de steengroeve. Na ongeveer een half jaar werd hij op transport gesteld naar kamp Thekla, een buitencommando van Buchenwald. Hij was blokoudste en werkte er in de vliegtuigfabriek.</p><p>Toen de Amerikanen naderden, stelde de SS-leiding een transport samen dat richting het oosten moest marcheren. Ook Janssen werd geselecteerd. Ze vertrokken op 13 april 1945. Op donderdag 19 april wist Janssen samen met een Franse gevangene te ontsnappen. Van een Poolse krijgsgevangene ontvingen ze onderweg eten, kleding en wat geld. Ze zwierven verder totdat ze weer in handen van de SS vielen en ze weer werden opgesloten. Ze wisten echter te ontsnappen en bereikten na een paar dagen bij Gera het Amerikaanse leger.
