Hij was de zoon uit het tweede huwelijk van zijn vader, die ambtenaar was bij het belastingkantoor in Ambon.</p><p>In 1940 vertrekt het gezin naar Surabaya (Java). De oorlog in Europa was net uitgebroken. De Japanse bezetting op Java heeft hij min of meer bewust meegemaakt.</p><p>Niet lang na de capitulatie in 1945 brak de vrijheidsstrijd van Indonesië uit. Hij en zijn broer sloten zich als vrijwilligers aan bij de zogenaamde PRI Maluku, een vrijheidsbeweging van jonge Molukkers die voor de onafhankelijkheid van Indonesië vochten. Hij was toen 15 jaar en beschouwde zichzelf als kindsoldaat.</p><p>Toen in 1946 de scholen in Surabaya weer opengingen, pakte hij zijn studie weer op. In 1949 studeerde hij af in de radiotechniek. Na tien jaar verblijf op Java, keert hij in 1950 terug naar Ambon, waar hij de opleiding telegrafist/marconist voor de zeevaart volgt. Het was voor hem ook een weerzien met zijn familie.</p><p>In dat jaar, 1950, werd de RMS, de onafhankelijke Zuid-Molukse Republiek, uitgeroepen. Weer zat hij middenin het oorlogsgeweld. Als sukarela (vrijwilliger) nam hij deel aan de gevechten. Vervolgens duikt hij onder in het bergdorp Hutumuri (eiland Ambon). Tijdens zijn verblijf in dat dorp wordt hij ernstig ziek.<br><br>Vanwege een technische storing in de opname-apparatuur is de rest van zijn verhaal niet beschikbaar.
