Zijn ouders brengen hem als kleine baby onder bij een Joodse oom en niet-Joods Duitse tante om hem te vrijwaren van deportatie. Zijn ouders en driejarig broertje worden weggevoerd en vermoord in Sobibor. Bij zijn oom en tante wordt hij weggehaald en naar de crèche tegenover de Hollandse Schouwburg gebracht. Het verzet weet hem hieruit te smokkelen.</p><p>Max wordt beschermd en liefdevol opgenomen in een gereformeerd gezin bij wie hij ook na de oorlog opgroeit. Hij weet wel van zijn Joodse afkomst, maar er wordt thuis nauwelijks over gesproken. Studeren vinden zijn pleegouders minder belangrijk. Max maakt uiteindelijk carrière in de transportsector. Voor de Nederlandse Luchtmacht heeft hij een tijd doorgebracht in Duitsland, deze periode ervaart hij als bijzonder prettig.</p><p>Door zijn verleden kampt hij een tijd met psychische problemen. Op latere leeftijd gaan het Jodendom en de joodse godsdienst steeds meer leven. Max is actief in het ‘oorlogscircuit’ en hij vertelt tijdens het interview over zijn ervaringen in het Demjanjuk-proces.
