Ze groeide op in een gezin met vijf kinderen, waarvan zij de derde was. Haar vader was onderwijzer en zij ging in Ambon naar school. Na de lagere school volgde ze een naaicursus. Met het verdiende geld kon ze voor een uur ‘chauffeuren’. Naast deze hobby zong ze ook graag in een band. Toen de oorlog uitbrak, vluchtte het gezin van de ene naar de andere plek. Voor vluchtelingen werden buiten de stad barakken gebouwd. In zo’n barak hebben ze even gewoond. Voor hen was het erg moeilijk om aan eten te komen. Mensen kregen hongeroedeem, aten dingen die ze anders niet zouden eten.</p><p>Ze kreeg werk bij een Japans bedrijf, waarvoor ze salaris kreeg. In 1946 trouwde ze, en met haar man, die ambtenaar was, ging ze naar Irian. Nog voor de RMS oorlog uitbrak, keerden ze terug naar Ambon. Weer was het moeilijk om aan voedsel te komen, weer moest er gevlucht worden. Tijdens de laatste onrust op Ambon de ‘kerusuhan’ in 1999, moest ze haar huis wederom verlaten. De rellen braken uit terwijl zij op visite was vanwege het einde van de ramadan. Ze wist toen nog niet dat het meer dan negen jaar zou duren voordat ze terug zou keren naar haar eigen
