Bij aanvang van de oorlog volgde hij een opleiding tot bankwerker en ging hij werken in de bouw. Later werd hij opgeroepen om te gaan werken in Duitsland, bij de BMW-fabrieken in München. Daar vervalste hij ontslagpapieren en reisde per trein terug naar Nederland. Hij werd opgepakt in Amsterdam, kwam in de gevangenis aan de Weteringschans terecht, verbleef vervolgens zeven weken in kamp Amersfoort. Daarna werd hij op transport gesteld naar Buchenwald.</p><p>In Buchenwald verbleef hij in barak 32 en werkte hij in het commando-\"stront dragen\" en het Bahnhofkommando. Na een periode van veertien maanden werd hij overgebracht naar een kamp in Wenen, waar hij eerst een magazijn met kruidenierswaren moest opruimen en daarna als automonteur werkte.</p><p>Wanneer de Russen in aantocht zijn, wordt hij overgeplaatst naar een plaatsje bij de Russisch-Tsjechische grens, waar barakken werden gebouwd. Vandaar ontvluchtte hij met medegevangenen. Na enkele omzwervingen kwam hij bij de geallieerden terecht en werd hij naar een kazerne in Frankfurt am Main gebracht.
