Door gitaarles te geven raakte hij verder thuis in de gemeenschap. Jan heeft theologie en filosofie gestudeerd, maar besloot uiteindelijk troubadour te worden. Als zodanig was hij een kleine ondernemer met alle risico’s van dien. Hij heeft in de 25 jaar dat hij zijn vak uitoefent veranderingen gezien in de verwachtingspatronen van klanten, waar hij op in heeft moeten spelen. Jan heeft geen arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering, hij vertrouwt op zijn reserves en op die van zijn werkende vrouw. Sinds een paar jaar heeft Jan samen met vrienden een nieuwe onderneming waarbij ze met drones, radiografisch bestuurbare vliegtuigjes, landmetingen doen in bijvoorbeeld Mozambique ten behoeve van landbouw en ontwikkeling. Jan meent dat zijn jaren als zelfstandige hem goed hebben voorbereid op deze nieuwe onderneming, ook al is de aard ervan heel anders.
