Om zijn studie te kunnen voortzetten, moest hij de loyaliteitsverklaring tekenen, wat hij weigerde. Hij besloot samen met een vriend en een neef naar Engeland te reizen. Tijdens een controle in een trein in Frankrijk werden ze opgepakt en na een verblijf in een citadel nabij de Spaanse grens, de gevangenis in Bordeaux en het doorgangskamp in Compiègne op transport gesteld naar Buchenwald. Het was inmiddels december 1943.</p><p>Door bemiddeling van Eric Roest kwam Willemse in het arbeidscommando van de Gustloff-Werke. Dit was een goed commando, waar de omstandigheden redelijk waren. Willemse kan zich niet meer herinneren wat hij deed in de periode na het bombardement van de Gustloff-Werke.
