When is Spending Time with Peers Related to Delinquency? The Importance of Where, What and With Whom. Crime and Delinquency. A face to face interview to record the daily activities of participants using the Space Time Budget Method. The study is designed to test various theories of crime and offending, in particular Situational Action Theory developed by Wikstrom (e.g. Wikstrom, 2006; 2009). The study instruments measure theoretical constructs at the individual, family, peer, school, and neighborhood level.

The Space Time Budget (STB) interview was conducted individually, face to face with each of the respondents, and also lasted approximately one school hour. During the interview, activities of the adolescents during each hour of four recent days (4 times 24 hours) were recorded. These four days always included the previous Friday and Saturday and the two most recent normal week days. This ensured comparability of the STB data across the respondents. The interview closely followed the Space Time Budget method as developed by Wikstrom in the PADS+ study. Detailed information was collected about the activities of the adolescents for each hour of the day, including the nature of the main activity (e.g., sports, learning, sleeping), the function of the place (e.g., soccer field, school, friend’s home), the geographic location (geo-code on a map of The Hague), and persons present in the setting (teacher, parent, peers, alone). Information was also collected about truancy, alcohol and drug use, presence in risky situations, victimization, offending and weapon carrying during the four days of the STB interview.
