De nazi's zetten hem gevangen in Kamp Schoorl. Via Amersfoort, Neuengamme en Dachau werd Charles in Auschwitz gevangen gehouden. Hij overleed daar in november 1942 aan de gevolgen van martelingen.</p><p>Rachel is later ook gearresteerd vanwege verzet. Omdat zij Joods was, is zij in Westerbork gevangen gezet. De zoon van Rachel en Charles, Dees, overleefde dankzij o.a. majoor Bosshardt.
