Hij dook onder, maar werd tijdens een overnachting in zijn ouderlijk huis opgepakt en opgesloten in de gevangenis van Hoorn. Vervolgens werd hij naar de gevangenis aan de Euterpestraat gebracht, daarna naar die aan de Amstelveenseweg.</p><p>Uiteindelijk kwam hij via kamp Amersfoort in Buchenwald terecht. Daar was hij werkzaam in de steengroeve, bij het Bahnhofkommando en bij het crematorium. Op een gegeven moment werd hij door de andere gevangenen van blok 32 benoemd tot nachtwacht en tafeloudste.</p><p>Eind november 1944 werd hij samen met vijfenzeventig andere gevangenen overgebracht naar kamp Langenstein. Na een paar dagen in de Stollen te hebben gewerkt, werd hij stoker op een locomotief. Tijdens deze werkzaamheden raakte hij ernstig gewond aan zijn bil. Vervolgens werd hij opgenomen in de ziekenbarak. Daar werd hij op 11 april 1945 door de Canadezen bevrijd. Hij reisde samen met een groep krijgsgevangenen per bus terug naar Nederland.</p><p>Met name de eerste paar jaar was het voor Wiers moeilijk om de draad van het gewone leven weer op te pakken. Gedurende vijfendertig jaar heeft hij zijn herinneringen aan de kampperiode onderdrukt. Tijdens het herstel van een scooterongeluk kwam het kampsyndroom naar boven.
