Om meer zicht te krijgen op de redenen daarvan, en de gevolgen voor de arbeidsparticipatie en de ervaren zwaarte van de combinatie zorg/werk, zijn middels enquêtes ouders ondervraagd. Ingegaan is op gewenst en feitelijk gebruik van formele opvang, veranderingen in het gebruik, redenen waarom minder gebruik wordt gemaakt dan voorheen of gewenst, en vragen over (veranderingen in) arbeidsparticipatie en ervaren zwaarte van de combinatie arbeid en zorg. Het onderzoek richt zich zowel op de instroom in, als de uitstroom uit formele opvang. Ook is een onderscheid gemaakt tussen dagopvang van 0-3 jarigen enerzijds en buitenschoolse opvang van kinderen op de basisschool.
