Zijn vader was natuurfilmer en was speciaal tijdens de oorlog naar Texel gekomen om de vogels en de natuur van Texel te filmen. Hij raakte als jongen bevriend met Brits-Indiers en later Georgiers. Hij gaat in het weekend met de Georgiers op stap en bewondert het gezang en de dansen. Tot in de jaren '80 en '90 heeft hij contact met hen onderhouden.  Aan het bos merken ze zijdelings van de opstand. Ze horen de beschietingen en zien na een paar dagen de Georgiers uit het bos komen om eten, water en verband te vragen.
