In 1939 nadat haar ouders gescheiden zijn verhuist Constance met haar Joodse moeder en haar vierenhalf jaar oudere zus naar Huizen. Ze worden op een avond gehaald en naar Westerbork vervoerd; de twee zusjes komen al snel weer vrij omdat ze half-Joods zijn, maar de moeder van Constance wordt op transport gesteld naar Sobibor waar zij na aankomst wordt vermoord.</p><p>Hoewel half-Joods duikt Constance onder bij een vriendin van haar moeder en haar twee zoons in Bussum. Later komt ze terecht bij ‘oom’ Wim en ‘tante’ Toos en hun drie kinderen in Santpoort. Hier doet ze het huishouden en blijft er tot een jaar na de oorlog. Op Dolle Dinsdag vlucht haar vader, NSB-lid en op zoek naar haar, naar Duitsland: vanaf dat moment voelt Constance zich vrijer. Constance Combrink-van Huizen heeft vijf jaar lagere school genoten, gedurende de oorlog gaat ze niet naar school.
