Hij is zoon van een stamhoofd en was het oudste kind binnen het gezin. In 1938 werd hij naar Ambon gestuurd om zich voor te bereiden op de opleiding aan de school voor inheemse bestuursambtenaren te Makassar. Zijn pleegvader op de Molukken was de raja van Seri Sori, Rudolf Anthon Frederik Kesudia. Van deze man zegt hij veel geleerd te hebben.</p><p>De oorlog verhindert voortzetting van de studie in Makassar. Hij meldt zich dan maar voor de tonijnjacht waar de Japanners mensen voor zochten. In 1943 werden hij en een vriend tijdens het vissen opgepikt door een onderzeeboot om een tijd later aan wal gezet te worden in Australisch Nieuw-Guinea. Maanden later verraste hij zijn moeder met zijn terugkomst, zij had gedacht dat hij al dood was.</p><p>In 1945 was hij betrokken bij acties in Balikpapan, Terakan en Brunei als solaat bij de NICA (Netherlands Indies Civil Administration). Met de onafhankelijkheidsverklaring  van Indonesië in 1945, hoorde hij woorden als 'proclamatie' en ‘kemerdekaan’ (vrijheid) voor het eerst in zijn leven. Woorden die een grote rol blijven spelen in zijn leven.</p><p>In 1949 woont hij de Ronde Tafel Conferentie in Den Haag bij. Vanaf 1962 heeft hij in Nederland gewoond. Tijdens dit interview treft hij voorbereidingen om voorgoed terug te keren naar Nieuw-Guinea, waar hij nu
