Tot 1940 werkt hij in Batavia, hierna in Singapore. De geïnterviewde gaat in op zijn werk en zijn sociale leven in Indië. Hij beschrijft het bombardement op Singapore. Terug in Indië gaat hij in militaire dienst en wordt krijgsgevangene gemaakt. Hij werd te werk gesteld bij de Birma-spoorweg. In 1946 helpt de geïnterviewde het bedrijf weer op poten te zetten. Men koos ervoor om geen onderzoeksproject op te zetten, maar om zich te concentreren op het verzamelen van de verhalen van mensen vanuit archiveringsoogpunt als basis voor toekomstig onderzoek.
