Via een tussenpersoon komt Ellen terecht in het leraarsgezin Van der Spiegel. Ellens ouders zijn beiden in Sobibor vermoord. Van vaderskant overleeft niemand de oorlog; het was een grote familie van meer dan tachtig mensen. Van moederskant overleven twee zussen de oorlog. De meeste van de zusters en broers van moederskant zijn ook in Sobibor vermoord, evenals een nichtje en een neefje. Alle vier haar grootouders zijn in Auschwitz vermoord. Ellen heeft de kleertjes die haar moeder haar aantrok voordat zij haar afstond, altijd bewaard.</p><p>Ze wordt christelijk opgevoed en denkt heel lang dat zij het enige Joodse weeskind op de wereld is. Op latere leeftijd verdiept ze zich steeds meer in haar Joodse achtergrond en haalt contacten aan met familieleden, ook in Israël. Haar achternaam is een combinatie van de naam van haar pleegouders en haar vaders familienaam.
