Hij ging om met jongens en meisjes van verschillende achtergronden en speelde graag korfbal. Aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog was Bernard in dienst. Tijdens de oorlog werd hij gedwongen om zijn werk als boekhouder bij een reclamebureau op te geven. Hij begon stoffen te verkopen op de markt en heeft een aantal keer een kraam gehad op de Joodse markt in de Gaaspstraat. In 1943 moest hij naar een werkkamp.
