Vanwege de arbeidsinzet werd hij tewerkgesteld in een fabriek in Dantzig. Tijdens een verlof keerde hij niet meer terug en dook hij onder bij zijn grootouders in Bergen op Zoom. In een café werd hij door een kennis benaderd om onderduikers en joden te begeleiden naar Antwerpen. Dit deed hij diverse keren totdat hij werd opgepakt. Hij werd verhoord en naar kamp Amersfoort overgebracht. Daar verbleef hij een jaar en werd vervolgens op transport gesteld naar Buchenwald.</p><p>In Buchenwald werkte hij aanvankelijk in de Gustloff-Werke. Toen hij op sabotage werd betrapt, werd hij voor bijna twee weken in de bunker opgesloten. Nadien werkte hij in het Baukommando en in kwikmijnen. De laatste vier maanden werkte hij voor een SS-er aan een motor met zijspan. Na de bevrijding stal hij samen met drie anderen diens auto en reed hij terug naar Nederland.</p><p>Al snel vond hij werk. Hij had het nadien behoorlijk moeilijk met zijn kampverleden. Na zeventien jaar besloot hij dit hoofdstuk van zijn leven af te sluiten.
