Zijn moeder werkte altijd in de gemeenteraad waar ze woonde. Toen ze na Leiden, Amsterdam, Putten en Oegstgeest in 1987 in Rotterdam ging werken, verhuisde het gezin mee. In die tijd had de stad al wel schwung, zoals hij het zelf omschrijft, al was het nog veel leger dan nu. Hij aanschouwde de bouw van de Delftse Poen — het gebouw van Nationale Nederlanden. Tussentijds verhuisde hij nog naar Delft, maar keerde weer terug. Met zijn partner Annemarie Eijkelenboom, een architect, kocht hij een klushuis in Spangen. ;</p><p>Hoewel in haar paspoort Rotterdam als geboorteplaats staat, kwam ze er pas wonen in de jaren negentig. Haar vader was architect en werkte in die zin ook mee aan de wederopbouw van Rotterdam. Hij was medeverantwoordelijk voor onder meer de totstandkoming van het Bouwcentrum, Kruisplein. Zelf is ze ook architect geworden. Ze is gespecialiseerd in het ontwerpen van gebouwen voor de gezondheidszorg en onderzoekt hoe de bouw een zo gunstig mogelijk effect heeft op de gezondheid.</p><p>Dit interview maakt onderdeel uit van het project Ziel van de Wederopbouw, wat in 2016 is ondernomen door Stichting Verhalenhuis Belvédère.
