Het gaat dan onder andere om hun gezondheid, welzijn, vrijetijdsbesteding, mobiliteit, sociale netwerk en het gebruik van voorzieningen. In OII2019 is een meetinstrument ingezet om de kwaliteit van leven bij bewoners met dementie te meten.</p><p>Het eerste onderzoek van Ouderen in Instellingen vond plaats in 1996 en is daarna enkele malen herhaald: in 2000, 2004 en 2008. De onderzoeken zijn een vervolg op elkaar waardoor het mogelijk is, met de nodige voorzichtigheid, om niet alleen inzicht in de huidige situatie van ouderen in instellingen te krijgen, maar ook een ontwikkeling in de tijd zichtbaar te maken.
