Zijn vader was beroepsmilitair bij het KNIL en daardoor verhuisde het gezin veel binnen Indië. Een aantal keer keerde het gezin terug nar Nederland. De geïnterviewde studeerde er medicijnen en vervolgde zijn studie in Indië vanwege het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In 1941 volgde hij in Indië een militaire training en werd hij tijdens de invasie ingezet. Hij was niet actief bij gevechten betrokken. De geïnterviewde kwam in een kamp terecht. De situatie was onmenselijk, overvol en hele slechte verzorging. Later kwam hij in een ander kamp waar hij hielp met het verzorgen van zieken. Na de capitulatie werkte de geïnterviewde in een ziekenhuis en zag hij de gevolgen van de bersiap tijd van heel dichtbij. Men koos ervoor om geen onderzoeksproject op te zetten, maar om zich te concentreren op het verzamelen van de verhalen van mensen vanuit archiveringsoogpunt als basis voor toekomstig onderzoek.
