Hij kreeg een oproep om zich te melden voor arbeid in Duitsland, maar gaf hieraan geen gehoor. Hij had immers al werk. Wel probeerde hij een vals persoonsbewijs te krijgen. Bij zijn tweede bezoek aan de ambtenaar van de gemeente 's-Gravenzande werd hij opgepakt. Dit gebeurde op 18 september 1943.</p><p>Na een verblijf van vier dagen op het politiebureau en van tien dagen in kamp Erica werd hij naar kamp Amersfoort gebracht. Daar verbleef hij zeven maanden. Hij werkte in het Jodencommando.</p><p>Op 18 april 1944 werd hij op transport gesteld naar Buchenwald. Na een verblijf van een paar weken in het quarantainekamp werd hij ondergebracht in blok achttien. Hij werkte in het arbeidscommando van de steengroeve en bij het Bahnhofkommando. In november 1944 werd hij op transport gesteld naar sub-kamp Langenstein. Hier werd hij ondergebracht in een groot landhuis. Doordat een paar gevangenen de oude houten stapelbedden doormidden hadden gezaagd, moest de groep voor straf een ruime week naar een Erziehungslager. Enige tijd later werd Van der Hout op transport gesteld naar kamp Moncheu. Ook hier werkte hij in het Bahnhofkommando.</p><p>Op 15 april 1945 was de bewaking plotseling verdwenen. Van der Hout en vier anderen bemachtigden een karretje en verlieten met wat spullen het kamp. Met diverse vervoermiddelen reisde hij terug naar Nederland. Hij kwam aan in Denekamp en kon na negen weken verder reizen.
