De geïnterviewde vertelt hoe hij opgroeide te Java en schetst een beeld van de vooroorlogse samenleving. Hij maakte de Japanse inval in Malang mee. Tijdens de bezetting probeerde hij wat geld te verdienen en ondertussen zijn school bij te houden. Na de capitulatie van Japan kwam hij in de gevangenis terecht waaruit hij uiteindelijk werd bevrijd door de Engelsen.</p><p>1684.2 De geïnterviewde vertelt over de periode nadat hij uit de gevangenis kwam. Hij vervolgde zijn school en ging studeren. Het was een zware tijd. Na 1958 werkte de geïnterviewde tijdelijk als arts, maar raakte als Indische Nederlander misplaatst in Indonesië. Tot slot vertelt de geïnterviewde over zijn vertrek naar Nederland. Men koos ervoor om geen onderzoeksproject op te zetten, maar om zich te concentreren op het verzamelen van de verhalen van mensen vanuit archiveringsoogpunt als basis voor toekomstig onderzoek.
