Bij terugkomst werden deze leningen uit het verdiende gage terugbetaald. Dit terugbetalen kon echter even op zich laten wachten en sommige leningen werden niet of slechts gedeeltelijk terugbetaald. In 1856 werd de Amsterdamse waterschout door de Tuchtwet verplicht om alle nog openstaande leningen in zijn stad te registreren.
