Bij het uitbreken van de oorlog moest hij onder de wapenen bij Pantser Lucht Afweer. De geïnterviewde werd in maart 1942 krijgsgevangene gemaakt. Hij vertelt hoe hij deze tijd heeft ervaren en gaat in op hoe het geloof hem op de been hield. Na de bevrijding verzorgde hij zieken in een kamp in Singapore. Hierna ging hij in de periode 1946-1948 in dienst bij de militaire politie. Hierna ging de geïnterviewde het burgerleven in. Hij gaat in op de corruptie die hij tijdens zijn werk bemerkte en geeft zijn visie op de komst van de soevereiniteitsoverdracht.</p><p>Familie van de geïnterviewde is ook geïnterviewd voor het SMGI-project. Men koos ervoor om geen onderzoeksproject op te zetten, maar om zich te concentreren op het verzamelen van de verhalen van mensen vanuit archiveringsoogpunt als basis voor toekomstig onderzoek.
