Haar vader was radio-operateur. Daardoor kon gemakkelijk de BBC worden beluisterd. Ook door die radio waren er redelijk veel soldaten de gehele oorlog rond het huis gemobiliseerd. Een broer kwam terug van dwangarbeid in Duitsland en stierf enige dagen na thuiskomst.  Op de eerste dag van de opstand werden, aan de eettafel, de vader van Annie en haar andere broer dodelijk getroffen door granaten. De broer stierf een aantal dagen later in het noodziekenhuis. De gebeurtenis speelde zich recht voor de ogen van Annie af en was bepaald traumatisch. Annie van Swinderen dwaalt als vluchtelinge met haar laatst overgeblevene kleine broertje langs verschillende huizen en krijgt uiteindelijk een armenhuisje toebedeeld. Ze kan zich nog steeds erg kwaad maken op mensen die de Georgiers als bevrijders zien of hun acties
