Toen hij een oproep kreeg om tewerkgesteld te worden in Duitsland, dook hij onder, aanvankelijk in Amsterdam. Op 7 oktober 1943 werd hij op weg van Amsterdam naar een nieuw onderduikadres in Culemborg in de trein opgepakt door de SD. Hij had geen Ausweis bij zich. Bij Geldermalsen ondernam hij een vluchtpoging. Deze mislukte en hij werd overgebracht naar kamp Amersfoort, waar hij te werk werd gesteld in de Nederlandse Sein Fabriek (NSF, of ‘Radiocommando’). Dit betekende geen appèl, geen werk buiten en voldoende te eten. Op 18 april 1944 werd hij op transport gezet naar Buchenwald. Hij arriveerde er een dag later. Daar werkte hij in de Gärtnerei en de steengroeve. Enige tijd voor de bevrijding werd hij met een twintigtal anderen in een buitenkamp geplaatst, waar ze hout moesten hakken, dat diende als brandstof voor autogenerators. In het buitenkamp werd hij bevrijd door de Amerikanen. Hij reisde terug naar Limburg, waar hij zes weken verbleef om op te knappen. Bovendien was Noord-Holland nog niet bevrijd.
