Meteen op 10 mei 1940 is er een grote groep Duitse militairen in de toneelzaal ondergebracht. Later werd de toneelzaal als eetzaal door de in het dorp gestationeerde Duitsers gebruikt. In de loop van de jaren zijn er verschillende groepen Duitsers geweest. Officieren werden in het hotel ondergebracht (wat tevens de leefruimte van het gezin was).<br><br>Het gezin kreeg vergoeding voor de inkwartiering en dat was een deel van het dagelijks inkomen. Ook kreeg het gezin elke dag eten van de Duitsers.<br><br>Een van de broers van mevrouw Meijs is opgepakt voor de Arbeitseinsatz in Duitsland. Een andere broer smokkelde over de grens, is gevlucht voor de Duitsers en in Australië terechtgekomen. Het gezin had ook een jongeman in huis die was ondergedoken om aan arbeidsinzet te ontkomen.<br><br>Mevrouw Meijs spreekt over NSB-ers in het dorp en over een vrouw die veel met Duitsers omging, maar ook een joods meisje met haar moeder ondergedoken had in haar huis. Deze moeder en dochter hebben de oorlog overleefd. Men wist van de Jodenvervolging, maar niet precies wat er met hen gebeurde wanneer zij in een kamp terechtkwamen. Na de bevrijding heeft het gezin ook inkwartiering van Britten gehad, maar deze werden als minder aardig ervaren dan de Duitsers.<br><br>Er komen enkele onderwerpen van publieke discussies ter sprake:
