Op zeer jonge leeftijd vertrekt geïnterviewde met zijn oom, een sergeant binnen het KNIL, als een soort aangenomen zoon uit Oma. Op deze wijze komt hij op verschillende plaatsten waar zijn oom wordt geplaatst. In 1939 gaan zij ‘op groot verlof’ terug naar Oma.<br><br>Als de Tweede Wereldoorlog uitbreekt, werkt geïnterviewde als radiotelegrafist onder bevel van het KNIL in Seram, in de buurt van Piru. Hij moet Ambon seinen als hij een vliegtuig ziet.</p><p>Tijdens de Japanse bezetting moet hij gedwongen werken als koelie bij de aanleg van een vliegveld in de buurt van Kairatu (Seram). Omdat de Japanners te weten komen dat hij radiotelegrafist is, bieden zij hem een baantje aan. Hij gaat werken op het Japanse kantoor bij het vliegveld, bij de afdeling Financiën. Op een gegeven moment wordt het vliegveld gebombardeerd door een geallieerd vliegtuig. Geïnterviewde vlucht en komt via Kamarian (Seram) terecht in het dorp Tial (Ambon). Hier is onder meer een Japans afweergeschut opgesteld. Hij heeft hier een betaalde baan op kantoor van de Japanners, bij de afdeling administratie, tot aan de capitulatie.</p><p>Aan het einde van de oorlog wordt Ambon door de Geallieerden platgebombardeerd. Nadat bekend wordt dat Japan capituleert, wil men in Tial wraak nemen op de Japanners. Geïnterviewde gaat werken bij de PTT in Ambon. Hij wordt diverse malen overgeplaatst. Zo komt hij onder meer terecht in Serui en Biak (Nieuw-Guinea) en Dobo (Aru). Uiteindelijk komt hij weer terug in Ambon, van waaruit hij ook tijdelijke diensten elders in de Molukken waarneemt.
