Hij werd door een Jood gewezen op de politie en hij besloot om zijn politiediploma via schriftelijk onderwijs te halen. Tegen zijn zin kwam hij in Wilhelmshaven terecht waar hij bij een toespraak van Hitler aanwezig was. Vervolgens kwam hij bij de politieopleiding in Schalkhaar terecht. Hij kwam in Amsterdam bij de gekazerneerde politie en begeleidde onder andere transporten van en naar Amersfoort, Vught en Westerbork. Tevens was hij belast met het ophalen van Joden in Amsterdam. Hij vertelt hoe hij zijn kennis gebruikte om Joden vooraf in burger te waarschuwen, waardoor Joden konden vluchten. De geïnterviewde  werd in 1943 gepakt wanneer hij via een brief contact probeerde te leggen met een verzetsgroepering. Na zijn arrestatie verbleef hij in de kampen Vught, Moerdijk, Amersfoort en uiteindelijk in een remmenfabriek in Berlijn.<br><br>The interviewee was born on April 22, 1921 in Bult Schutsloot and worked across the border in Germany as a farm labourer for a German farmer. Gerard decided to study for the police exams after a being recommended to do so by a Jew. Against his will, the interviewee ended up in Wilhelmhaven where he attended a speech by Hitler. Later on, he attended the police academy in Schalkhaar. He worked in Amsterdam with the police in barracks and accompanied, among other things, human transports to and from the camps in Amersfoort, Vught and Westerbork. He also worked during round-ups of Jews in Amsterdam. He explains how he used his knowledge to warn Jews beforehand, while dressed as a civilian. This gave Jews the opportunity to flee. He was arrested in 1943 when he tried to make contact with a resistance group. Deze interviews vormen een onderdeel van een project uitgevoerd door het United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Oral History Department, waar het valt onder de 'Europe Interview Projects: Interviews with Witnesses, Collaborators, and Perpetrators'. Naast de Nederlandse interviews zijn er ook interviews gemaakt in het (Wit)Russisch, Grieks, Macedonisch, Pools, Oekraiens, Servisch, Ests, Lets, Litouws, Moldavisch, Frans, Duits, Roemeens. De aantallen interviews per land variëren sterk. Het project is in 1996 begonnen en loopt nog steeds, zie website USHMM: http://www.ushmm.org/research/collections/oralhistory/<br><br>Since 1996, United States Holocaust memorial Museum's (USHMM) Department of Oral History has conducted a documentation project to collect the testimonies of individuals who were not direct victims of the Holocaust. These interviews are with witnesses, collaborators, and perpetrators. In ten years, over 600 interviews have been conducted in the following European countries: Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, The Netherlands, Poland, Romania, the Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia. These interviews serve not only as corroboration of what Jewish victims and survivors report in their interviews and memoirs, they also create a broader understanding of the tragic events of World War II by adding the perspectives of non-Jewish populations.
