Hij werkte bij zijn vader op de tuinderij in Naaldwijk. Hij dook onder nadat hij een oproep had ontvangen voor werk in Duitsland. Door een samenloop van omstandigheden werd hij opgepakt en kwam hij in kamp Amersfoort terecht. Na een mislukte vluchtpoging mocht hij niet meer in het buitencommando werken.</p><p>Na drie maanden werd hij op transport gesteld naar Buchenwald. Hij verbleef er in de blokken 49 en 32 en werkte in de Gustloff-Werke, bij het Bahnhof Kommando en in de Gärtnerei. Twee dagen voordat Buchenwald werd bevrijd, moest hij mee op transport. Na een reis van vier tot vijf dagen met honderd man in een kolenwagon, kwam hij aan in kamp Flossenbürg. Vanaf daar moest hij lopend verder.</p><p>Na vier dagen was Van de Berg zo verzwakt dat hij niet meer verder kon. Hij dook een hooischuur in en raakte buiten westen. Eenmaal weer bijgekomen, bleek hij te zijn bevrijd. Na de bevrijding zwierf hij een paar dagen rond. Zijn conditie was dusdanig slecht dat hij in een lazaret belandde, waar hij uiteindelijk werd opgehaald door het Rode Kruis. Hij kreeg vetvrij eten en hij kreeg bloed en vocht toegediend. Langzaam maar zeker herstelde hij.
