In die tijd hadden zijn ouders twee evacués in huis. De ene, een oudere dame, hielp veel in de huishouding, de ander was een kleermaker die in die periode vanuit zijn kamer bij Ridder werkte. Vanuit de bovenwoning boven de textielzaak van zijn ouders had hij goed zicht op de passanten op hongertocht die dagelijks langskwamen, wat veel indruk maakte (1.27 – 1.33). Daaronder bevond zich opvallend veel familie die zelfs tips doorgaven voor ‘heerlijke bollensoep’. (1:33-1:36) Het bieden van hulp zagen zijn ouders als burgerplicht; moeder was erg daadkrachtig. Zij hielp moeder met baby uit Putten na de razzia die in paniek was. (2:09) Voor katholieke vrouwen die in het Noodziekenhuis Tijsseling bevielen, is ze ongeveer tien keer doopmoeder geweest. (2:40) De familie bevond zich in de positie om textiel te ruilen tegen eten. Dat deed ze standaard tegen vooroorlogse prijzen. (37:54) Van een sociaal leven was bijkans geen sprake vanwege de spertijd en omdat het voor Ridder druk was als oudste zoon in het gezin met veel kleine kinderen. Eenmaal is Ridder samen met enkele nonnen uit het St. Jozefgesticht eten wezen halen in Twello. In deze periode is hij eenmaal bij het passantenverblijf geweest en de Bonte Koe (2:07), enkele malen bij de locatie van het Nijkerkse Noodziekenhuis waar de operaties werden uitgevoerd en eenmaal bij het baarhuisje op de algemene begraafplaats. (1:03) Ridder werd ingezet als verkenner voor mensen op hongertocht die Landwachten wilden ontlopen. (1:33:50) Ondertussen functioneerde het huis als alternatief postkantoor. (1:36) Ondanks de hectiek, ervoer Ridder de tijd niet als dramatisch.
