In het onderzoek is gekeken naar hoe ouders over de betaalbaarheid, toegankelijkheid én kwaliteit van opvang denken. Ook is gekeken in hoeverre deze percepties samenhangen met het gebruik van opvang, de arbeidsmarktparticipatie en de werk-privébalans van ouders. In het onderzoek zijn ook kwetsbare gezinnen betrokken, aangezien deze groepen relatief weinig gebruik maken van formele opvang en onbekend is wat hiervan de achterliggende reden is.<br>Bij het onderzoek is onderscheid gemaakt in kinderopvang en buitenschoolse opvang . De doelpopulatie bij kinderopvang waren huishoudens met het oudste kind geboren in 2016 (zgn. baby-groep) en bij buitenschoolse opvang huishoudens met het oudste kind geboren in 2012 (zgn. kleuter-groep).<br>De vragenlijst kon - naar keuze van de respondent - schriftelijk of via internet worden ingevuld. De respons was 1.832, waarvan 900 Kinderopvang- en  932 BSO-vragenlijsten.<br>De steekproeftrekking is verricht door het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS).
